Gallery Portal 11 presents the project “New York Group. Circle”. 01.03. – 06.04.2025.
After World War II, a significant group of gifted artists found themselves outside Ukraine once again. When outlining this new phase in the development of Ukrainian poetry and culture as a whole, we primarily refer to the work of the poets of the New York Group (Bohdan Boychuk, Zhenya Vasylkivska, Vira Vovk, Patrytsia Kylina, Bohdan Rubchak, Yuriy Tarnavskyi, and others). The association existed from the 1950s to the 1990s in New York. The founders of the group were Bohdan Boychuk and Yuriy Tarnavskyi. The New York Group published its own annual literary journal titled “New Poetry”.
However, alongside the writers and poets, visual artists played a prominent role in this group. The exhibition will showcase significant works by the artists of this movement.
Among the artists whose works will be presented:
Yuriy Soloviy – a Neo-Cubist artist, creator of the graphic design for the “New Poetry” journal, and the author of a series of portraits of the group’s members;
Mykhailo Urban – is a painter and sculptor of constructivist style, originally from Galicia. His sculptural works are characterized by abstract forms, freely arranged in space and decorated with polychrome; in painting, he favors geometric compositions.
Liuboslav Hutsalyuk – a painter, graphic artist, and art historian. A participant in art exhibitions in the USA, Canada, and Ukraine. Hutsalyuk’s art is intuitive, walking the line between abstraction and figuration; still lifes, portraits, and imagined lyrical landscapes filled with sunlight;
Yaroslava Gerulyak – a ceramic artist, graphic artist, and painter. As an artist, she works in various genres and with different materials: drawings, carpets, theater, and masks;
Jacques Hnizdovsky – was a Ukrainian and American artist, graphic artist, ceramist, and art historian. He worked with Ukrainian pigments, tempera, and various hard dyes, and was also known for his engravings on wooden and metal plates. Additionally, he created small sculptures. His creative legacy includes hundreds of paintings and over 300 engravings (woodcuts, etchings, and linocuts).
