Exhibition “Another Viewpoint. Late 1980s – Early 1990s”

Gallery Portal 11 presents the exhibition “Another Viewpoint. Late 1980s – Early 1990s”. 04.07. – 31.08.2025.

The exhibition “Another Viewpoint” at Portal11 gallery invites the viewer to delve into a unique period of Ukrainian art — a time of dramatic change that spans the final years of the Soviet Union and the first five years of Ukraine’s independence (late 1980s – early 1990s).
It was an era when rigid ideological frameworks were crumbling, opening space for bold experimentation, new worldviews, and unconventional artistic ideas.
Portal11 has always strived to discover and present the work of artists who stepped away from the mainstream, exploring alternative paths and forms of expression. “Another Viewpoint” showcases the works of artists whose creative voices served as barometers of the time, reflecting not only social transformations but also deep shifts in both personal and collective consciousness.

The featured artists — Y. Burda, V. Yeresko, N. Haiduk, V. Kot, H. Lisnychyi, A. Lozovyi, S. Maistrenko, G. Olempiyuk, I. Taverovsky, V. Fedoruk, and Y. Charyshnikov — each responded in their own way to the challenges of the time, creating works that today stand as a valuable archive of a transitional era. These works are not merely paintings but visual diaries that capture the emergence of a new aesthetic and a new way of thinking.
The exhibition places emphasis on an “alternative gaze” — nontraditional, sometimes prophetic — that was characteristic of the art of this period. The artists offer another viewpoint on a world filled with metaphor, surreal imagery, and philosophical introspection. Their works testify to a cultural eruption at the crossroads of eras, when art became a space for innovation and a deep reflection on the very nature of freedom.
