Serhiy Kolos is a bright representative of Ukrainian modernism, and at the same time he is one of the constellation
that made the ideological and artistic method of Boychukism a cultural phenomenon of its time. As an artist, he skillfully worked with oil and watercolor painting, graphics, weaving, carpet making, etc. He also possessed encyclopedic knowledge in the field of Ukrainian and world art. In his scientific works, the history and regional zoning of Ukrainian textiles are deeply revealed, typologies of ornaments, production technologies and many other artistic features are analyzed.
Serhiy Hryhorovych Kolos (October 8, 1888 – December 19, 1969) was a Ukrainian artist and art critic. He studied in Italy, at the Neapolitan Institute of Fine Arts (1911), continued his art education in Munich (1912-1914). He studied at the Ukrainian State Academy of Arts in the monumental painting workshop of Mykhailo Boychuk and in the composition and folk ornament workshop of Vasyl Krychevskyi (1918-1922). He took part in the painting of the premises of the Kyiv Opera House before the 1st Congress of the Voluntary Executive Committees, together with Tymofiy Boychuk – the author of the panel "Blacksmith" (1919) and the drawing "From a Kazanka" for the painting of the Lutsk Barracks (1919). Since 1927, he has participated in republican and all-Union art exhibitions. He headed the textile department of the Kyiv Art Institute (1925-1930). In the first half of the 1930s, he taught at the Margelan Silk Weaving Technical School and the Tashkent Textile Institute (1936-1940), at the Kyiv School of Applied Arts (1946). The exhibition at the Portal 11 gallery is a significant cultural event that highlights the artistic practices of an outstanding artist who was a bright representative of Ukrainian modernism.
