Gallery Portal 11 presents exhibition “AZOVSTAL”. 30.09.22 – 30.10.22.
Azovstal is a unique anthropogenic phenomenon that we consider in several contexts. It is an industrial giant with a rich history. It is a place of feat, but also, on the contrary, a place of great tragedy of the Ukrainian people.
Currently, it is a ruin, which in the future should become a memorial complex. In retrospect, the plant was damaged during the Second World War, but was restored. After this war, he will also be reborn in a new incarnation.
Azovstal is a “city within a city”, which in 2022 became a battlefield in the Russian-Ukrainian war. Many artists reflected this industrial fortress in their works at every historical stage of its existence.
It should be noted that not every metallurgical plant received the attention of artists. Paintings, sculptures, songs, dioramas, photographs, engravings remain as monuments of the plant’s history.
The symbolism of the coincidence of the place, the events of 2022 and the names are also worth noting. In Mariupol, on the shores of the Sea of Azov, the walls of the Azovstal plant welcomed both civilians and military personnel, among whom were soldiers of the “Azov” regiment. All these people became a symbol of the resistance of the entire nation. Therefore, it should be studied as a complex phenomenon. Azovstal is part of our culture and history, which is reflected in art. Today, this object is being rethought.
The exposition presents etchings by artist Viktor Vikhtynskyi, sculptures by Mykhailo Hrytsiuk, watercolors by Mykola Kutniakhov.
